The Braves took the Opening Day weekend series against the Mets in New York, 2 games to 1. Atlanta outscored New York 19-5 across those three games, putting an absolute EXCLAMATION POINT on it with a 14-1 win in the series finale. This weekend’s series will be both teams’ second straight 4-game series, both teams also went 2-2 in their previous series. New York’s previous opponent was the Boston Red Sox.

Rick Porcello will start the series off for the Mets. Porcello’s only start so far in 2020 came against Atlanta in the Opening Weekend Series. He didn’t last very long in that Mets loss; pitching 2 innings, giving up 7 hits & 6 earned runs on his way to earning his 27.00 ERA. He was the starter for the 14-1 series-clinching Atlanta win.

Atlanta’s series-opening starter will be the young lefty, Sean Newcomb. Newcomb’s most effective role in 2019 was coming out of the bullpen. He has big league stuff, he just often struggles with command. At times, he looks as though the strike zone is running from him. His lone start on the year also came in that 14-1 Atlanta victory over the Mets. Throwing 3.1 innings with 3 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, a strikeout, & an ERA of 2.70. If Newk can fill up the strike zone it should be an easy day for the hometown team.
